Make Your Own Cupcake Tower

We knew that we wanted to have cupcakes for Mom's birthday party and needed it to hold at least 4 dozen cupcakes.  I thought that a rectangular tower would be best and found a really cute Wedding Cupcake Tower on Pinterest. At first I thought we could use shipping boxes, but they weren't the right proportions. Then I thought that we could build boxes out of thin wood, but then what would I do with them afterwards? Not to mention all the work it would take to construct them from wood.

Then lightening struck! We could build them from foam core board from Dollar Tree!  Took 5 sheets (get 6 just in case!).

I apologize for the poor picture quality. We were frantically getting ready for the surprise party and I took these right before the first guest arrived and the lighting was very dim.

The boxes were very easy to make.  The bottom box is a full sheet of foam core board with 4 inch tall sides.  I used an exacto knife to cut the foam core and it was very easy to cut. Cut the sides 1/4 less than the top measurements so that you can glue the pieces together and they won't hang over the edges.

The bottom box also has 3 supports and the other 2 boxes only have 2 each.  It helps to have an extra set of hands when you start gluing everything together.  I used the glue gun and Leigh placed the pieces and held
them together until the glue set.

Glue the outside pieces and then glue the center supports in.

The next box is 3" smaller than the bottom box with the back edges lined up.  Same for the top box - it is 3" smaller than the middle box.  This allows enough room for your cupcakes.

After the boxes were put together, each box was wrapped (individually) in shiny white wrapping paper and ribbon was taped to each box in 3 different colors.

I love how quick and easy this was and it looks quite elegant, if I do say so myself!  It can easily be stored under the bed and can be used for many occasions with just a change of paper and ribbon.

We used a footed glass bowl filled with flowers for the top centerpiece, but you could easily use a stuffed animal for a children's party, a pumpkin for Halloween or any number of toppers for your celebration.

The table backdrop came about because we needed the floor space in the dining room, but after pushing the table against the wall, my terracotta curtains just didn't work with the party color scheme.  So for a quick table backdrop, we took down the curtains and tied 2" strips of fabric on to the rod.  The fabric was purchased at Wal-Mart for $1 a yard, so the whole thing might have cost $10.

The cupcake tower gave the table just the right look and held all of the cupcakes in style.  We will be sharing more goodies from the party so come back soon!

Wish you all a very happy Labor Day!

  1. First of all... what a FUN party! I love the idea of the cupcake stand. I have one of those super cute cupcake towers but it holds all of 12 cupcakes and who puts out only 12 cupcakes at a party HELLO? I generally rig up some kind of plate system around it for the others but I love this idea and will build something for our Halloween party. Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide

  3. What a great idea! You can always adjust the size to your needs as well. The best part is you can use it over and over again, or perhaps you'll be loaning it out to friends over and over again, lol!

I linked over from the Homemade By You Link Party where I am participating too with Sympathy Card and Free Sympathy Cut File and would love it if you'd stop by.
    Hugs, Antonella :-)

  4. What a neat idea. Cupcakes seems to the in thing verses a cake.

    1. The best thing about cupcakes is that everyone can serve themselves! Much easier and allows the hostess to enjoy and not have to stand there serving slice, after slice of cake! It was so much easier and looked really pretty too.

  5. This is perfect! I have a bunch of Styrofoam sheets; some are 1" thick, and others are 2" and 3". I was wondering what I could do with them--now I know! Thank you so much for the inspiration, and I love how you made all the other decorations for your Mom's party! It is so beautiful!

  6. Approximately how many cupcakes will this tower hold? I'm planning a high school grad party for my daughter and I plan to have a small cake and about 50 cupcakes.

    1. It will hold about 54 cupcakes or more if you have them touching each other. Hope that helps!

  7. How big is the top tier? Will it be big enough for an 11x13 cake on top?
